U.C Berkeley going green

Recently at U.C.Berkeley on the ASUC election ballot, The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) passed with 69% of votes. A fee of $5 per student per semester will be contributed to a student funded and student majority controlled fund. TGIF will provide money for projects that include initiatives on renewable energy, energy efficiency, resource conservation, "green" student internships, and more. It is good to see that students want to be involved and want to make a difference in college. Over 20 universities across the country have been involved in initiating green fees. This program will help raise over $200,000 annually which can help make significant efforts in making Cal a more sustainable University and cut down on the 200,000 metric tons of CO2 produced at Cal each year. Even though the administration should be paying for the campus sustainability initiatives, this is a big step for students to actually drive the effort in putting pressure on the administration to do more.
