Effects of Global Warming
A recent study of the Australian Great Barrier Reef has shown that warmer sea temperatures have created a coral disease called White Syndrome. White Syndrome turns the coral white and the effect of the temperature is highly dependent on the density of the coral cover. Outbreaks of White Syndrome occurred on reefs that had warmer temperatures that had greater than 50% coral cover. Interestingly, the healthiest reefs suffered the most because of the dense concentration of coral polyps. Scientists estimate that 25% of the world’s coral reefs have been lost and another 30% can disappear in the next 30 years.
