Gartner encourages IT Organizations to go green

Gartner suggests that customer service and field service organizations can help reduce carbon emissions, through field service and call center agent optimization, parts optimization, intelligent device management and collaboration. By using technology such as Web collaboration tools, e-learning and problem resolution systems. A problem resolution system involves having remote agents walk through problems as opposed to going onsite to troubleshoot the problem. Here are some tips that Gartner has for IT organizations that can help conserve energy and reduce waste.

· Start measuring power consumption
· Consume fewer servers and printers by increasing utilization – virtualize servers
· Stop over-provisioning; improve capacity planning
· Improve the efficiency of cooling
· Turn power management on, use a low power state or turn equipment off
· Extend the life of assets by reusing within the enterprise and externally
· Ensure and validate the correct disposition of all electronic equipment
· Analyze all waste

Organizations were never really concerned about power costs and CO2 emissions until recently and with the increased awareness in the media, IT organizations will be making significant changes in becoming more “Green”.
